Everyone says CheckRa1n a tethered jailbreak. But that means you have to connect your device to your computer all the time, doesn’t it? Then, why is there so much hype about it when you have to do that?
And why is it a "permanent" Jailbreak if you lose it every time you restart your phone?
Because Apple can’t patch Checkm8 - leaving all a11 devices and lower susceptible to the exploit that makes the jailbreak possible; on any and all firmwares that have been or will be released - ie. Forever jailbreak for those devices.

There’s 3 different types of jailbreaks
Untethered - you can restart your phone and when it turns back on, your phone is still jail broken - these are preferred, but the hardest to come by.
Semi-untethered - when you reboot your phone - you lose the jailbreak, but your phone is still usable - jailbreak again and you’re laughing (checkrain / unc0ver)
Tethered - the least favourable of all the jailbreaks - every time your phone power cycles - you need to connect the phone to a computer to get it to boot up properly.

They mean permanent as in "it can never be patched by Apple in newer iOS versions". SecureROM (BootROM) exploits cannot be patched in software.

That is correct. The fully tethered jailbreaks have hard patches that require a computer to always be present even to boot to stock iOS. A semi-tethered jailbreak like CheckRa1n lets you boot to stock without a computer so you can make use of your iDevice in case it reboots and you're nowhere near a computer, but you would need a computer to re-enable the jailbreak.
